初一

初一

red and gold diamond marks the door
word standing on its head
fortune has arrived

mandarins in hand
fragrant, wrinkled gifts
prosperity in pulp

blessings on tongues
good grades, more money
give me grandchildren

cymbals clang and lions leap
men sweaty beneath costumes
dancing to feed their families

we bathe in colour and noise
laughing and clapping, imbibing festive cheer
wearing new clothes, old paper faces
